LOOKING FOR AN ATTORNEY THAT GETS RESULTS?

FAQS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:

WHAT TYPES OF CASES DO YOU HANDLE?

A:

Put generally, we are trial lawyers who handle business disputes and personal injury cases. On the business side, we have handled cases touching almost every kind of commercial dispute: partnership breakups, business fraud, shareholder litigation, government overreach, intellectual property, breach of contract, legal malpractice, financial institution litigation, and more. We have prosecuted and defended claims with damages claims approaching nine figures, and we have appeared in state and federal courts throughout the country. Our business-litigation practice includes representation of plaintiffs and defendants. Our attorneys have also handled a wide variety of injury matters, ranging from auto accidents to medical malpractice to slip-and-fall injuries. Our injury practice is limited to representing the injured ("plaintiffs").

Q:

HOW MUCH WILL MY LAWSUIT COST?

A:

Litigation can be expensive. To minimize the financial burden a lawsuit puts on our clients, their families, or their businesses, we represent a majority of our clients on a contingency-fee basis. Under a contingency-fee arrangement, the client only owes our firm a fee if we recover funds through a settlement or verdict. If the case is unsuccessful, the client owes us nothing. All of our injury cases are handled on a contingency fee. This allows you to work on recovering from your injury and its impact on your life, while we focus on your case. If you have a business-litigation case, a variety of options may be available. Our preference is to litigate your case on a contingency basis-tying our success to yours and eliminating the inefficiency of the billable hour. But not every case is well suited to a contingency arrangement. In those instances, we are happy to discuss hybrid arrangements, a traditional billable hour structure, and other options.

Q:

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A CONTINGENCY FEE?

A:

Most importantly, you do not have to worry about large legal bills arriving in the mail each month. We will be aggressively pursuing your case, and you will not pay more or less based on how hard we are working. Contingency fees are typical in injury cases, and for good reason. An injury can impact your ability to work and saddle you with significant costs, including thousands of dollars in medical bills. Few injured persons are in a position to pay an attorney thousands of dollars to hold negligent parties accountable. Contingency fees are less common in business cases. Many law firms are unwilling to align their own financial risk and reward with that of their clients. We are different. It is how we prefer to practice law. Of course, a contingency-fee arrangement does not work with every business dispute. We remain open to alternative fee structures-including hybrid arrangements, hourly arrangements, flat fees, and reverse contingencies-in these instances.

Q:

HOW LONG WILL MY CASE TAKE?

A:

Any lawyer who tells you exactly how long your case will take is either lying or guessing. Some cases settle within weeks before a lawsuit is ever filed. Some complex cases can take years to resolve. We move our cases forward aggressively and push for the earliest possible trial dates because we know that delays add uncertainty to your life and burden you and/or your business. Our goal is to get you the best recovery possible, as quickly as possible. And we commit to keeping you updated on the case timeline throughout our representation. Q:

WHY SHOULD I USE YOUR FIRM?

A:

There are many great lawyers in Kansas City, but we believe our firm offers a special blend of litigation experience and personalization. Because of our size, we limit our caseload and devote significant attention to each case. Some firms have a senior attorney sign clients up, only to pass the client off to a young associate or support staff once the case is ongoing. Our firm does things differently.

Q:

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

A:

We are located in the West Bottoms in the historic Livestock Exchange Building, close to the Hy-Vee Arena (formerly Kemper Arena). Our location puts us within a short distance of the Jackson County Courthouse and Wyandotte County Courthouse. Although we are based in Kansas City, we accept cases throughout Missouri and Kansas.

We understand that not everyone is located near the downtown area, and that not everyone has the ability to take time during business hours to schedule a meeting. We frequently meet clients at their homes, offices, or other locations, and are willing to work with you to find a time that works best, even if that means a time outside business hours or on a weekend.
